This month we are looking at movements of the spine including backbends, sidebands, forward bends and twists.
When we move the spine we stimulate all of our being from the nervous system to the movement of energy around the body.
The main movements of the spine are:
flexion (forward bending), extension (lengthening, backhanding) , lateral flexion (side bending), and rotation (twists)
In yogic philosophy the spine is the energetic centre of the body, the energy centre through which our energetic life force, Prana, moves.
Energy centres of the spine are called Chakras (pronounced “CHAH-krah,”)
From the base upwards the Chakras are:
ROOT CHAKRA - Muladhara - I AM - Stability, safety, grounded
SACRAL CHAKRA - Svadhisthana - I FEEL - creativity, comfort
SOLAR PLEXUS - Manipura - I DO - strength, realisation of creativity, determinations, power
HEAR CHAKRA - Anahata - I LOVE - acceptance, love, compassion, sincerity
THROAT CHAKRA - Vishuddu - I TALK/COMMUNICATE with self and others, inspiration, expressions, communication.
THIRD EYE CHAKRA - Ajna - I SEE - intuition, trust, meditation, connection
CROWN CHAKRA - Sahasrara - I UNDERSTAND - knowledge, consciousness, spirituality
We will explore the energy centres of the spine as move it in all directions and connect inwardly each week.
