Namaste all
Tomorrow we will continue working with backbends and working towards keeping all of the poses steady. Steadiness means with the breath staying even and supporting the movement and being able to maintain good alignment in each of the poses keeping the mind engaged in the feedback, both subtle and gross, from the body and breath.
Sthira Sukham Asanam - is a quote from Patanjali (Sutra 2.46) which literally means finding a stable and comfortable seat but can apply to all aspects of asana practice.
The word Sthira translates as steady or still but can also mean steadfast, strong or alert.
In asana we are always working towards balance between effort and ease, of body, breath and mind being alert to subtle feedback and responding accordingly so that the practice can remain steady and balanced and the mind still and focussed throughout.
Sukha translates as comfortable and relaxed which is what we are working towards in all asana practice. To work as strongly as we are able in each moment but with balance being comfortable and at ease in all poses.
Asanam - means postures during which we should not be struggling with body, breath or ming but rather finding balance.
In tomorrow’s practice remember to work with balance between effort and ease, comfort and strength, alert and steady, being wherever you are able to be in each asana without force.
Remember in the words of Jana Kingsford
“Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create.”
Looking forward to creating balance in body, breath, mind, backbends and balances tomorrow to better create sthira sukham asanam.
Shanti Om
